Why do people return to the classics?

Because the quality of their writing is of such elegance that it can’t be compared to some of the modern fiction writers of today.

An excerpt from David Copperfield by Charles Dickens:

I discovered afterwards that Miss Lavinia was an authority in affairs of the heart, by reason of there having anciently existed a certain Mr. Pidger, who played short whist, and was supposed to have been enamoured of her. My private opinion is, that this was entirely a gratuitous assumption, and that Pidger was altogether innocent of any such sentiments - to which he had never given any sort of expression that I could ever hear of. Both Miss Lavinia and Miss Clarissa had a superstition, however, that he would have declared his passion, if he had not been cut short in his youth (at about sixty) by over-drinking his constitution, and over-doing an attempt to set it right again by swilling Bath water. They had a lurking suspicion even, that he died of secret love; though I must say there was a picture of him in the house with a damask nose, which concealment did not appear to have ever preyed upon.

Psychological Profile of a Murderer
Posted by admin at 3:07 am in Great book titles

Ismael Gil is a psychologist and someone who has assessed astrology to model a profile of a murderer. In his book he is not so much interested in the motive of the murderer. This would be the field of the homicide detective. His interest is focused on the psychological traits of the person committing the murder.

In his book — twelve ways to kill (in the original title: 12 formas de matar) - he presents a study performed on 36 murder cases. There are a few famous examples, like Carlos Monzon, the Argentinean boxer who killed his wife, The Black widow who killed her husband Maurizio Gucci, Cunanan, who killed Versace. Many of the examples are less famous and focused on the Spanish situation. Gil lives and works in Barcelona.

The idea to setup profiles of murderers and associate them to the zodiac is new as I know. This makes it a very interesting book. The book also shows a historical view on these murders as much of these cases are hidden in our memory and not accessed frequently. Few of the cases gave me a “oh yes” sensation. Especially the case of Carlos Monzon which I read about when living in Argentina.

The practical approach made it an easy read. This was negatively compensated by the modeling approach which made the material — on itself not an easy subject — hard to finish. I often use models in my own approach and this book gave me the insight that using a model to present an idea has disadvantages; you must first explain the model and than apply it. This is a sort of two step approach. I know a few things about astrology, but not much more than the basic water, air, land and fire basics. For reading the book that is hardly enough and I got often dazzled by the planets, the houses, etc… And some kind of reasoning is not mine, for example the setting of the stars at time of the killings; this makes it hard to digest that it is “all in the stars.”

Some profiles where quite easy to understand, others I found less credible, or less characteristic. However for everybody who is interested in the human mind, this book which is focused on those extreme cases as murders, offers very nice insights.

How I Finally Got Six Pack Abs
Posted by admin at 4:07 pm in Great book titles

Don’t we all want six pack abs? At first glance I look like a pretty in-shape person. I’m 5′9″ and weigh around 180lbs. I have more of a muscular build and look like a healthy person. The only problem area I have is my abdominal area. I work out about twice a week. I used to go to the gym on a regular basis, but recently stopped because of the gas prices and other issues with my license I don’t care to discuss. I exercise from time to time in my home just to stay in shape, but no matter how many crunches or sit ups that I do, my abs will not show.

I tried various different methods of exercising, diets, etc. None of them worked! I was surfing the online a few weeks ago and found this ebook called The Truth About Six Pack Abs. I liked how the facts were presented to me. It sounded totally different from any type of tips or programs I’ve encountered in the past. I basically started following the guide step by step and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results that I’m getting already.

I didn’t think I would start looking this good so fast. I was in shock for a few days like.. ” Is this really me in the mirror?!” Yes its me. And it can be you too if you are willing to give it a try. Visit the site in my resource box. Thanks for reading!

What Are the Two Best Selling Books Ever
Posted by admin at 2:07 am in Great book titles

Based on popular estimates, the two best-selling books ever published on the earth are the Christian Bible and that bible-like book for the Chinese communists, Quotations from Chairman Mao, which is popularly known as Mao’s Little Red Book. That means the two dominant and contrasting ideologies in the world today are taking their battle for superiority even in top-selling charts of publishing sector. It is estimated that about 6.5 billion copies of Quotations of Chairman Mao have been published, majority of them in China. Based on this statistics Bible is a close second, with an estimate of about 6 billion printed copies all over the world. There are some other estimates that put the number of copies of Holy Bible ahead of that of Quotations from Chairman Mao.

Bible is a book that needs no introduction. It is the religious book of Christianity. It is read out in on a regular basis in churches and religious functions in Christian community. It is taught in schools in Christian countries and those managed by churches. It is undoubtedly the most famous book in the world. It is said to have been published in almost all languages with an active publishing culture. As the holy book of one of the most widely spread religions in the world, Bible definitely has access to a widely scattered population. The book itself is a sublime mixture of fluid writing and supreme philosophy. It has another record, though a little bit dubious. It is said to be the most stolen book in the world, according to an informal survey among the proprietors of leading bookstalls in the world.

Quotations from Chairman Mao contains words of wisdom mainly related to socialism and revolution from the yesteryear’s doyen of Chinese communism Mao Zedong. Mao was at the forefront of the Cultural Revolution initiated in China by Chinese Communist Party. His vignettes of wisdom are frequently quoted in the writings in most languages. Since the working of communist party sometimes resembles that of the church, there should be no wonder that the book that reflects superlative thinking of Mao has become a must-have in every home in China. There are certainly some who doubt the credentials of estimates that put a book written by a former ruler of an Asian country in the best-selling list along with Bible. Considering the fact that China is the most populated country in the world by a distance, it is perfectly comprehensible that Mao’s Little Red Book always remains big in the best-selling lists.

It should be mentioned that there are some other estimates that put another Chinese book, Zinhua Dictionary, as the best-selling book, after Holy Bible. Don-Quixote, written by the Spanish master Cervantes is considered as the best-selling fiction book in the world.

My Book’s Published - Now What?
Posted by admin at 4:07 pm in Great book titles

“My Book’s Published - Now What???” by John Harnish with Jane M. Martin is an easy, but important read.

The target market is every newly published author. John clearly explains the facts of life for authors. I’ve read it cover to cover and he covers it all.

It covers bias bending, copyediting, understanding your book numbers, different publishing methods for differing author needs, the positive differences of author-originated publishing, your first book order, how to sell your own book (and you must), reviews, book design, publicity, exposure, conferences networking, Infinity’s role in supporting social responsibilities, increasing your books’ revenue flows, and an assortment of questions and answers. In other words, it is a treasure of knowledge, references, and insightful knowledge based on experience.

One thing I have learned along this writing path, is the importance of continual reading in our market and well as others. John’s book certainly provides plenty of insight. I’ve placed about sixty sticky tabs for quick reference, when referring to certain aspects he covers. Some things I knew and were reminders. Others were new welcome knowledge. I’m just getting ready to re-read my tabs.

New Infinity Publishing http://www.infinitypublishing.com authors get a complimentary copy automatically with their proof copy of their book. If you are working on writing a book, I’d suggest reading this early. It will give you a wealth of knowledge and help your path to a successful book. You can order it from bbotw.com, (Infinity’s online bookstore). Most authors and/or writers will find this a useful tool.

Valuable Books Deserve Good Care
Posted by admin at 1:07 am in Great book titles

If you have books that you expect to increase in value and hope to sell at a handsome profit, then the first principal to follow is to discontinue reading these books. Even white glove treatment could cause permanent damage. And discontinue loaning them out to anyone. Obtain a second copy of your favorite tomes for reading yourself and for lending out to family members or friends.

Keep your valuable books away from all food and drink. The ideal environment for your valuable books should be as close to museum conditions as is possible for your budget. That means heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer. An enclosed chamber with temperature and humidity control is for the serious collector with ample financial means. But everyone should do whatever is possible to maximize the book storage conditions. The idea is to provide an environment with as steady a temperature as possible, with as low as moisture content as possible. Fluctuations in temperature and humidity cause books to warp, buckle, crack and fall apart. Storing books in your regular living space is acceptable, but not in the basement, garage or attic.

Books are hygroscopic, meaning that they readily absorb moisture. And what enemy of books thrives on moisture? Mold! Mold thrives in dark humid places, so air circulation is crucial to the care of your valuable books. Be aware that insects need food, and books are a gourmet meal with their sugary glues and paper starch. Many people do not realize that wood, leather, paper, and other materials in books are all food to insects. High humidity causes mold growth, and increased insect activity. Routinely check areas where books are stored and examine for signs of insect and mold activity.

Books should be stored upright on a shelf. Make sure your books are stored so the spines are straight and upright. Use shelves big enough so that the books will stand up and clear the shelf above. The shelf should be deep enough to allow empty space behind the volumes. The shelf should not be on an outside wall where the temperature fluctuations might be extreme. The shelf should be in the darkest, low moisture inside room of your house. Never let the sun or any other source of ultraviolet light shine on your valuable books.

Do not write in your valuable books. Period. Not even a penciled-in name on an inside cover. Unless, of course, you are standing right in front of the author. Then of course it is in your best interests to allow this author to sign your book!

You should put your dust jackets in acid-free dust jacket protectors. These are the clear plastic covers that you see on library book dust jackets. It is the most economical way to protect your books from wear and tear. It is relatively inexpensive, and easy to apply, as there is no tape or glue.

Clean your books every year or so. When you take books off the shelf, make sure you pull the book from the middle of the spine instead of from the top of the spine. After carefully removing the dust jacket, hold the book closed tightly and dust off the top and edges with a good feather duster. Then put the dust jacket back on.

If you follow these basic principles for valuable book care, your books should increase in value while maintaining a condition very near to their present condition. Buying rare books can be a great investment and a lot of fun. You just may find you have a truly rare gem on your shelf.

In the world we live in today, we assume that everything that we ingest or put on our bodies is safe because we have regulatory groups in the United States that make sure that unsafe products are not being produced and marketed to the public. In addition, we believe that most companies who make products that are either ingested or placed on the skin are safe for use. The fact is that information revealing any negative effects on the human body of any commercial substance may take years or decades to discover.

So, it becomes imperative that we become smart consumers and look out for known toxic ingredients in any products that we put in or on our bodies. Baby boomers are beginning to retire and according to marketing people these retirement years are going to be the best years of our lives. Maybe and maybe not. If we can protect ourselves from heavy metal exposure, we may be able to avoid serious neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease which would clearly destroy our golden years.

I was shocked when I started reading the very informative book, “The Brain Wash” by Dr. Michelle Schoffro Cook. Dr. Cook contends that our delicate brains are under assault from numerous toxins including heavy metals on a daily basis. In fact, Dr. Cook believes that in 15 years there will be more people suffering with brain diseases than with cancer and heart disease combined! This is a frightening possibility that should have every baby boomer quaking in their heavy metal boots! This will be the time that many of us will start to enjoy our goldrn years. It sounds like we there is a large possibility that we may not be able to remembe them or anything else! I am terrified by this possibility so I am going to do everything possible to ensure I protect myself from this terrible fate and I believe most people want to do the same. Therefore, it becomes critical that we know what to protect ourselves from and where these substances are located.

Everyone is familiar with the neurodegenerative disease, Alzheimer’s Disease. I remember hearing in the news about aluminum being found in the brain lesions of Alzheimer’s Disease patients. I believe this information has been known for at least 15 years. Since I do not have a relative with Alzheimer’s Disease, I had forgotten about this information until I was reading “The Brain Wash.” While reading, I decided that I would pay much closer attention to my exposure to a number of toxins including aluminum in hopes that limiting my exposure may reduce my risk for developing any neurodegenerative diseases. Let’s start with the heavy metal, aluminum, and discuss how we remove potential exposure to this heavy metal.

As you read on, you may be surprised by the number of products that contain aluminum that you are using on a daily basis. Products such as drugs and personal care products have aluminum salts as primary ingredients. The skin is our largest organ and we absorb most substances that are put on the skin to at least some degree. If you think about the hours, days and even years that you have used any of the he following items on your body, then your will begin to get the idea of how much exposure you have had to aluminum.

Antiperspirants: Almost 100% of antiperspirants are made with a form of aluminum. I now know that I can no longer use an antiperspirant unless I can find one that is aluminum free. However, we could respond to the problem by changing our perception of sweating. Let’s make sweating positive rather than negative! If sweating was considered to be a cool thing to do, then we would not even consider using an antiperspirant.! Let’s talk about the beauty of sweat! I am not kidding! Sweating is really healthy and it is time that women, especially in the U.S., do not worry about the look and smell of sweat! If we get a case of the vapors, just sweat! Let’s make wearing antiperspirants as socially unacceptable as smoking!

Shampoos, body lotions, body creams: A large number of these items have aluminum based ingredients. Spend a few minutes reading the ingredients on the bottles of personal care items at the drugstore and you will be astounded by the number of products that contain aluminum based ingredients. In fact, it should be especially disturbing that so many “personal care” items contain aluminum since the news about aluminum and Alzheimer’s Disease has been known for years. Did these companies just not care? If we stop buying antiperspirants with aluminum, they will care. They will care so much that they will find alternative ingredients to keep the business. There are alternative ingredients available and used today so buy aluminum free products instead.

Antacids: There are several different salts that are used in antacids. A very common one is aluminum hydroxide. You can find aluminum hydroxide in Mylanta and Maalox. There are alternatives such as magnesium and calcium carbonate. There is a natural product, Refluxamine that contains a natural source of calcium carbonate and it does a great job relieving heartburn. Let’s stop using aluminum hydroxide antacids for heartburn!

To ensure that we enjoy the “best years of our lives” we will need to be alert to the ingredients in products that we use on our bodies. If we have used these products over time, it maybe best to be proactive and try to help our central nervous system heal even before we know there is a problem. We can make sure that our diets contain antioxidants and other phytonutrients that repair cells, before there are so many that we end up with a neurodegenerative disease.
